However Incongruous

Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon
16 June – 30 September 2011

At the Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Raqs created a new fibreglass sculpture However Incongruous, after studying the history of the area. The Gulbenkian Gardens stand on a piece of land that was once used for a fun-fair and Raqs resurrects Albrecht Dürer's Indian rhinoceros 'Gainda' immortalized in his woodcut titled 'Rhinoceros'. 'Gainda' had been sadly lost at sea while being transported, in time, from Lisbon to the Vatican and its sudden reappearance in the Gulbenkian Gardens in a carousal carriage 'allows the space to be haunted by its own past'.
